Seaweed Through a Braided Lens

We are now ramping up activities in Year 2 of Seaweed School, including hiring and training a local Citizen Science Coordinator to lead routine seaweed diversity monitoring on hornby. Please contact us is you'd like to participate in this exciting initiative.

In 2024-2025 the Hornby Island Natural History Centre and the Hornby Island Community School (SD71) grade 7&8 class launched a collaborative learning initiative focused on local seaweeds. Guided by the framing question: “How do we care for local seaweeds at this time of ecological instability and climate change?” The initiative began with hands-on exploration and observation alongside UBC professor and phycologist Dr. Bridgette Clarkston, author of Pacific Seaweeds and her team. We created this video to share the first year of our learning adventure.
