Sacred Water with Heather Royal-Brant
Join Indigenous educator Heather Royal-Brandt for an enriching session in our ongoing series, Looking at the Environment through an Indigenous Lens. Together, we’ll explore traditional teachings, deepening our understanding of land, kinship, and our shared responsibility to care for Mother Earth. This is an opportunity to listen, reflect, and reconnect with the natural world through a perspective rooted in ancestral knowledge.

Voices for the Islands with Sheila Harrington
Join author Sheila Harrington for an illuminating talk and reading of her latest book, Voices for the Islands: Thirty Years of Nature Conservation on the Salish Sea. Enjoy some great photography of the islands and its wildlife as she reads three engaging sections from the book, including some early history of the Conservancy Hornby Island.
Hear about Sheila's inspiring sailing trips to detail the legacies of founders and current conservationists on seventeen local islands, featuring Hornby Island in her reading. Celebrate the stories of these dedicated islanders! Learn about the community's challenges and successes as well as their methods and tools for protecting these precious natural places. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Slip on your gumboots and step into the magic of the intertidal. Join local legends Steve Macdonald and Bill Roland for a guided exploration of Hornby’s shorelines. Wander the water’s edge and discover what thrives on, in, and under the coastal shallows. With advanced training in marine biology and decades spent immersed in ecological research Steve and Bill bring a deep reverence and rare knowledge of our coastal ecology.

Water Stewardship on Hornby Island with Michelle Nakano
Where, Why, and How to Do it. Fresh, potable water sources are limited on Hornby and reducing and reusing it both indoors and outside will help conserve this finite resource. Join water steward and landscape horticulture educator Michelle Nakano for an update on the quantity and quality of island water, and learn the practices to implement before winter to slow down rainfall for infiltration, filtration, storage and recharge of Hornby’s groundwater.
