Hornby Island has a long and complicated history when it comes to our beautiful friends, the humpback whales. This walk will take you through the history of whaling in the Strait of Georgia, the effects it has had on our oceans, and an update on where our whales are at now.

Through a type of treasure hunt, we will wander through a lesser-known trail where we can see three types of forest ecosystems all in a short span of time.

Voices for the Islands with Sheila Harrington

Join author Sheila Harrington for an illuminating talk and reading of her latest book, Voices for the Islands: Thirty Years of Nature Conservation on the Salish Sea. Enjoy some great photography of the islands and its wildlife as she reads three engaging sections from the book, including some early history of the Conservancy Hornby Island.

Hear about Sheila's inspiring sailing trips to detail the legacies of founders and current conservationists on seventeen local islands, featuring Hornby Island in her reading. Celebrate the stories of these dedicated islanders!  Learn about the community's challenges and successes as well as their methods and tools for protecting these precious natural places. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

This is an interactive forest walk that will engage and educate children on some of the more important species in our woods here on Hornby Island.

Through a type of treasure hunt, we will wander through a lesser-known trail where we can see three types of forest ecosystems all in a short span of time.

Where, Why, and How to Do it. Fresh, potable water sources are limited on Hornby and reducing and reusing it both indoors and outside will help conserve this finite resource. Join water steward and landscape horticulture educator Michelle Nakano for an update on the quantity and quality of island water, and learn the practices to implement before winter to slow down rainfall for infiltration, filtration, storage and recharge of Hornby’s groundwater.
