The Hornby Island Natural History Centre

is seeking a

Summer Program Coordinator / Museum Educator.

Position starts June 22/21 and ends Sept. 4/21

Tuesdays to Saturdays, 25 hrs per week for 11 weeks at $19 per hr.

Eligible applicants need to be Canadian citizens between 18 and 30.

Job Description:

Representing the Hornby Island Natural History Centre in community outreach. The job will involve working outdoors much of the time with two days per week outside Room to Grow and two days at the Farmer’s Market from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. The 5th day will be spent on a research and design project developed collaboratively with the applicant to be used in the new NH Centre and can be done remotely.

All work will be done within the parameters of provincial COVID19 regulations and Public Health Orders. Please provide a resume and cover letter and send to hornby.naturalhistory@gmail.com by June 3rd.

Tasks:

  • Interacting with the public, informing and updating them about the Natural History Centre, it’s new summer program, and its future plans for reopening
  • Researching and designing a project or display related to environmental awareness or advocacy to incorporate into the new Centre
  • Making our new Forest Discovery kits available for sale to the public, encouraging curiosity of the natural world as well as respect and conservation of the environment
  • Assessing the program and suggesting ideas for future improvement
  • Keeping financial and other records

    Requirements:
  • Previous experience working in a Natural History Museum, Centre, Nature House, or related environmental organization
  • Educational background in environmental studies and or museum curatorial studies
  • Experience working well with the public especially families and children-Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team and independently
  • Research and digital skills
  • Canadian citizen between 18 and 30
  • Secured accommodation on Hornby or Denman Island is an asset
